  Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of a link-level simulator of Underwater Acoustic Communication (UWA) that reflects the real marine environment. The proposed simulator integrates a Bellhop-based channel model with major physical layer (PHY) modules to construct End-to-End performance evaluation environments. Its modular architecture and GUI-based control allow for the comparison of various algorithm combinations within the UWA channel. Through performance evaluation using the simulator, key trade-offs in UWA system design were empirically analyzed. We confirmed that the optimal equalizer selection is dependent on the pilot resource length and compared the performance of channel codes based on codeword length under an identical code rate. This study is significant as it complements the limitations of real-world sea trials and provides a standardized simulation framework for evaluating UWA PHY technologies under consistent conditions.
